The SQL Specialist will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining SQL databases and related systems. This role involves writing complex SQL queries, optimizing database performance, and ensuring data integrity across all systems. The SQL Specialist will collaborate with other IT professionals and departments to support various business needs through effective data management and reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Database Design and Development:

    • Design and develop SQL databases to meet business requirements.
    • Write, optimize, and manage complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
    • Ensure proper indexing and normalization of databases to optimize performance.
  2. Data Management and Integrity:

    • Maintain and ensure the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data within databases.
    • Implement data migration and transformation tasks as required.
    • Develop and enforce database standards, guidelines, and best practices.
  3. Performance Tuning:

    • Monitor and optimize database performance, including query performance, indexing, and resource utilization.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve database performance issues.
    • Implement and maintain database backups, recovery plans, and disaster recovery strategies.
  4. Reporting and Data Analysis:

    • Develop and maintain reports using SQL and other reporting tools to support business operations and decision-making.
    • Provide ad-hoc data analysis as requested by various departments.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and define reporting requirements.
  5. Security and Compliance:

    • Implement and manage database security protocols, including user roles, permissions, and encryption.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant data protection regulations and internal policies.
    • Regularly audit database systems to identify and mitigate potential security risks.
  6. Collaboration and Support:

    • Work closely with developers, system administrators, and business analysts to ensure database solutions meet business needs.
    • Provide technical support and expertise to other team members and departments.
    • Assist with the development and maintenance of documentation, including database schemas, processes, and procedures.
  7. Continuous Improvement:

    • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in SQL and database technologies.
    • Continuously seek opportunities to improve database performance, efficiency, and security.
    • Participate in ongoing professional development and training.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with SQL databases.
    • Proven experience in database design, development, and performance tuning.
    • Experience with SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, or other relational database management systems.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in writing and optimizing SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers.
    • Strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and best practices.
    • Familiarity with data warehousing concepts, ETL processes, and reporting tools (e.g., SSRS, Power BI).
    • Experience with database security and compliance best practices.
    • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automation is a plus.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Certified Professional, or similar are desirable.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
    • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and data integrity.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Environment: Primarily office-based with potential for remote work depending on company policies.
  • Hours: Full-time position with occasional after-hours or weekend work for maintenance and upgrades.
